I was really pleased with this thermometer the first time I used it. I was smoking a turkey and a pork shoulder and it was within 5 degrees of a truly accurate hand-held dial thermometer. Went to do a roast a couple of weeks later and the dang thing “thinks” 40 degrees is 147 degrees. I did all the reset/ battery/turn to the north while holding one leg up BS and nothing will make it read within 100 degrees of the correct temp. I bought the most expensive one that was available at Cabela’s in an ongoing effort to avoid buying crap…no luck in this case…I just want things to work for crying out loud. I will gladly fork over the bucks for a high quality item whether it be boots, sunglasses or whatever but its starting to seem no matter what a guy tries to buy anymore or how much he pays, Chinese crap is all that’s out there.

I used it for a couple of times in a charcoal grill and it works fantastic, obviously doing the sync procedure described in the reviews.
Next time I tried to use it, the screen displayed about 200°F and it was not a batteries problem. I tried everything either putting the probe in the freezer for hours to get temp down and no response, but this works for me because I noted after hours that the screen displayed only 2 degrees below from the initial temp and that was impossible.
**Recommendation**
If you want to buy one of this, be sure to include two “Replacement Probe for Oregon Scientific BBQ Thermometers” for +/ 9.99 each one plus the shipment for the probes because they are not from the same seller (Amazon is for free) and remember that is a very fragil part, use it and remove from fire/oven and leave it to get cold.

No matter how many times I reset or powered on/off, it would not synch with the base and therefore didn’t work.

What can I say, this product never worked properly. The unit would turn on, but despite my best efforts, thorough reading of the manual, etc, would not register temeratures (at all, ever)……but here’s the kicker; I REPEATEDLY attempted to contact Oregon Scientific….NO RESPONSES. NONE. As far as I’m concerned, this unit should be considered warranty-less, as there is simply NO CUSTOMER SERVICE TO BE FOUND from Oregon Scientific. I hate to tell people not to buy based on a solitary defective unit, but coupled with Oregon Scientific’s baffling refusal to even respond to customer inquiries, I’d have to suggest steering clear of this unit, or being prepared to live with the consequences if you get one of the defective units.
